Sugar Deluxe DJs are a back-to-back duo, and they’re marking Fela Anikulapo Kuti’s birthday week with FELA IN 5. The night covers more than five decades of the Afrobeat pioneer’s music, along with the artists he influenced.
Fela took traditional Yoruba music and mixed in highlife, jazz, funk, salsa and calypso. The result was big, horn-heavy and rhythmically complex: long grooves with layered percussion and call-and-response vocals. High Dive’s room and hi-fi system are tuned for exactly that kind of music. You’ll hear every horn line and interlocking rhythm clearly, without it turning into noise.
Come to listen, come to dance, or do a bit of both.
