Conception brings five of Birmingham’s most seasoned jazz players to High Dive for a night of original music and modern jazz. Guitarist Carlos Pino founded the group in 2024 as a regular home for the band’s own compositions. The quintet moves across decades and styles. The set includes a few classics from Kenny Dorham, John Lewis and Jimmy Heath, but leans toward newer music from John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Nate Smith, Brian Blade, Marc Johnson and Larry Goldings, plus plenty of Carlos’ originals.
Joining Pino are Steve Roberts on trumpet, Desmond Sykes on tenor sax, Ryan Brown on bass and Michael Glaser on drums. Every member contributed arrangements to the night’s set list. Between them they bring decades in the Birmingham music scene, some going back 30 years, along with work as jazz educators.
Jazz is made for a room like this. In High Dive’s acoustically engineered space, every detail and ghost note comes through clean and clear.
